Mauricio Pochettino made a double change at half-time, however, and the rejuvenated Saints equalised through Jay Rodriguez on 65 minutes, a fine counterattacking goal featuring a sharp one-two with Steven Davis.
Both sides had glaring chances for more goals but eventually had to settle for a point each.
